Currently Loving: Ashley Vintage Diamond Engagement Ring

What’s better than a classic diamond solitaire? A classic diamond solitaire with a twist! Our Ashley Diamond Engagement Ring has a subtle swirl detail on either side of a prong-set .46ct diamond. This ring is named after Vintage Style Council member Ashley of Sweet William, whose style is a similar blend of the best of classic and modern.

We asked Ashley to create a pinboard built around our Ashley Vintage Diamond Engagement Ring and she chose images that reflected the classic style of Jean Shrimpton and Grace Kelly.

“For this ring, I wanted to feature some classic beauties that matched the classic beauty of this ring,” Ashley explains. “The setting and stone in this ring are, to me, traditional, but elegant. It is simple, without being boring. It is for the girl who is tailored, but loves a pop of color. Who puts a modern twist on old Hollywood glamour.”

Currently Loving: Shelly Vintage Diamond and Sapphire Wedding Band

When we asked our Vintage Style Council member of the month Shell from Kitty and Buck to write a guest post for us about our Shelly Vintage Diamond and Sapphire Wedding Ring, she created something truly unique. Below you’ll find a pictorial story she put together that shows the lives of the people who may have originally owned the ring. The images in the collages below come from a pinboard she created on Pinterest.

I created this pin board after seeing the Shelly Vintage Diamond and Sapphire Wedding Ring for the first time and wondering how it came to be. I conjured up an images of a young couple meeting and falling in love in the 1950′s, going on dates in milk bars and drive ins, dancing and going bowling.

The part where they realize ‘this is serious’ and tell their friends, family and anyone who will listen. A more comfortable easiness surrounds them, a familiarity with each other.

They are engaged and married and finally, a honeymoon camping under the stars.

The final images show their new life together, forming memories and a future together. I love imagining the life of a vintage item before it came into my life. I hope you enjoyed the journey of the Shelly ring.

Vintage wedding photographs: Newly married in the 1950s

The 1950s produced some of the most intricate and beautiful diamond rings since the Victorian era. One of the rings from the 1950s currently in our collection of antique rings is our Muriel Vintage Diamond Engagement Ring. This striking white gold ring features a .15ct European-cut diamond that was originally cut in 1910 and gorgeous botanical filigree that curls up the band. Currently Loving: Fiona Vintage Diamond Engagement Ring

Every vintage engagement ring on Turtle Love Co.‘s website has its own unique style. Some have a Victorian feel, while some are decidedly dignified and traditional, and some are more sweet and floral. Theresa from Despising Life is So Passe recently built a style board on Pinterest around our Fiona vintage diamond engagement ring, a piece that fits in the latter category.

The theme of Theresa’s board is “charm.” As she says, “I feel like a lot of people get caught up in the idea of making their weddings as extravagant as possible. An outdoor wedding reception in the cool evening of September with a blanket of stars accompanied by vintage lanterns to light up the night is the epitome of perfection in my eyes.”

The Fiona Vintage Diamond Engagement Ring, circa 1950 and made of 14k yellow and white gold with a .14ct brilliant-cut diamond set in a scalloped, raised box setting, fits perfectly into this retro inspired outdoor celebration. “It really pulls together that lovely vintage charm,” Theresa explains, “It is such an outstanding piece in its uniqueness and beauty, a wedding like this would add a memory to make it much more special.”

Vintage wedding photos: Marvin and Wanda’s 1960s wedding

Today’s vintage wedding photo is one of the rare found photos in Turtle Love Co.’s collection that has two names written on the back- the groom and bride, Marvin and Wanda. Like last week’s vintage wedding photo this one appears to be from the 1960s.

Emily Post on the order in which a bride should wear her rings: “Since the wedding ring must not be put above the engagement ring, on her wedding day a bride either leaves her engagement ring at home or wears it on her right hand. Afterward she wears it above her wedding ring.” (from the 1970 edition of Emily Post’s Pocket Book of Etiquette)

One of the antique engagement rings on our site from the 1960s is our Avery Vintage Diamond Engagement Ring. This robust geometric white and yellow gold setting features a .40ct brilliant-cut diamond with color K and clarity VS/SI. When we discovered Little Ghost Vintage, one of Portland’s newest and hippest vintage clothing and decor stores, we knew we had to do a photo shoot there using some of our vintage engagement rings. The blend of modern and classic items for sale at Little Ghost perfectly matches the character of Turtle Love Co. and our Vintage Style Council Member of the Month, Laura from sweeter salt, who joined us as a model for the photo shoot. The majority of the antique engagement rings in the photographs below are new to our collection, but some, like our Joan and Cordelia vintage diamond engagement rings, are favorites of ours that we couldn’t resist including! We love our little photo studio at TLC headquarters, but sometimes to get the best images of our vintage rings and engagement rings we have to venture into the world outside the office. Recently, Michelle Souliere, owner of The Green Hand, welcomed us into her bookstore to photograph some of our vintage rings on some of her vintage books. The Green Hand opened in 2009 and, as their Facebook page accurately states, they are “an eclectic used bookshop that encourages curiosity” whose motto is “a good book in every home and a good home for every book!”

Fancy Dress Friday: dogs and ring designs edition

We’re being visited in the office today by Xander’s fabulous and well behaved dog, Bea (seen here in our Fancy Dress Friday TLC family portrait). Bea’s visit is just the icing on the cake of a productive week here at Turtle Love Co., which included everything from social media conferences to officially announcing the winners of our first annual jewelry design contest!

On Monday we shared a photo from our vintage ring shoot at The Green Hand, a magnificent used book store in Portland, Maine. Michelle, the owner of The Green Hand, helped us choose a selection of beautiful antique hardcover books to photograph some of our vintage engagement rings on. Here is our Josephine Vintage Diamond Engagement Ring resting on the gorgeous green, blue, and gold cover of one of the books. Thanks again to Michelle for letting us explore her shop- it was the perfect backdrop for our antique engagement rings and we came away with some interesting books too!

Vintage Style Council Member of the Month- Of Corgis & Cocktails

July is upon us and in this month famous for its “dog days” of summer, it’s only fitting that our Vintage Style Council Member of the Month is none other than our dog loving fashion blogger Katherine from Of Corgis and Cocktails!

Katherine, who joined Turtle Love Co.’s Vintage Style Council in the Spring of 2012, is a product designer who shares her outfits, travel, dog advice, and recipes on her blog. She considers silver to be her favorite precious metal and says “When I was younger, my sister would buy me lovely sterling silver jewelry as a birthday gift. I still have many of the pieces that she picked out for me and treasure them. Even my wedding and engagement rings are not the typical white gold - my husband found a sterling setting, preferring the silver himself!” She chose to become a Vintage Style Council member for a few different reasons: “ First, I was excited about the community it could create. Second, as a product designer, I love being able to put my mind to different things. Being able to collaborate and give opinions on products keeps my creative wheels spinning. Lastly, I really just love the designs that Turtle Love Co. offers. If I was not already engaged, I would be pushing my boyfriend towards the amazing vintage rings! ”
