Cathy Heinz, second prize winner of Turtle Love Co.’s first Engagement Ring Design Contest

Where are you from/where do you create your jewelry and what kind of jewelry do you wear?

I was born in Louisville, KY. My studio is in my home. My studio is bursting to the seams, but it’s actually pretty well organized. There are so many little parts in jewelry! I added two big picture windows so that I could have more light and look outside…I wear pieces that I make for myself, not always things I would sell. I tend toward a modern look, not fussy or too precious. I like large earrings. I actually am on my second engagement ring (the first one was stolen!). I’ve never reset it (I was happy to get a second ring!) — it’s a traditional marquise diamond solitaire. It and my wedding band are very slim 18k yellow gold.

What made you want to become a jeweler and how long have you been designing jewelry?

I really can’t remember a time when I didn’t [design jewelry]. When I was about 4, I made earrings for my mother for Mother’s Day that were seashells painted with fingernail polish with clips glued on the back. She actually wore them to church! My poor Mom! I was always begging my aunts for their castoff costume jewelry so that I could take it apart and put it back together in new ways. I got serious about metalsmithing because I wanted to make rings. I started out at MECA (Maine College of Art) with Pauline Warg, and then took other classes with her, Kate Wolf, Jayne Redman, and Blaine Lewis. They are the gold standard of teaching jewelry making skills. It became a profession because I needed to sell some things so that I could support my jewelry “habit”!

How has your work evolved over time and what do you love about being a jeweler?

Since I like to experiment so much and learn new techniques, it took me a while to settle down into a “look,” but my designs are typically simple, modern, refined, feminine, but not cutesy. I sometimes feel as if art jewelry today is made with the mantra “when in doubt add another stone,” as if that will solve all design flaws, but I don’t particularly like that. [What I like best about being a jeweler is] being able to execute what I imagine. I especially like doing commissioned work for people who want a meaningful piece of jewelry. Being able to participate in their lives that way is something special.

Lady of the Lake Engagement Ring, the second prize winning design in Turtle Love Co.’s first Engagement Ring Design Contest

Why did you choose to enter our contest?

I had never entered a contest before, but I liked your site and the way you presented the contest. I had an idea for a design but I couldn’t make it work within the rules so I had to give it up. But I just couldn’t stop thinking about the contest so I entered at the last minute with a version of a ring I had been making lately.

What inspired your design?

My customers. I’ve done quite a few engagement ring makeovers. I wanted to make something timeless, that would look just as good on the 25th anniversary as it did at the wedding. For the physical design, I’m intrigued by the idea of something rising out of the sea. That’s why I used the Lady of the Lake legend. I wanted it to work well with a wedding band, so I made the “lake” a little smaller.

How do you feel about your design winning?

Thrilled and amazed!

Meet the Designer: Elizabeth Ryan

Elizabeth Ryan is the first prize winner in Turtle Love Co.’s first Engagement Ring Design Contest. Her winning design, the Lovebirds Engagement Ring, is now available through Turtle Love Co.’s website in sterling silver with a white topaz, white gold with a diamond, or white gold with a sapphire. When we first announced that Elizabeth Ryan has won the contest we sent her some interview questions so that we (and you!) could get to know her better.

Where are you from and where do you create your jewelry?
I grew up in Spencer, MA (a small town in central Massachusetts), although we have been out in the Northampton, MA area for the past 3 years. I have a great studio space in town, which is in an old mill building where brushes were once made! My space is small (perfect for just me and my small jewelry tools) and the building is home to lots of other local artists and small businesses. My space has a full wall of windows, it is bright and sunny and overlooks Mill River.

What kind of jewelry do you wear?
I am attracted to delicate and small jewelry, very similar to the jewelry I create. I am also attracted to jewelry that is cute and clever. One of my favorite (non-Looka Jewelry pieces) to wear is a morse code necklace by Coatt that spells out “Bubbe” in gold beads and dashes. I always wear my beautiful engagement ring by Adel Chefridi. I love Adel’s jewelry and fell in love with his diamond accented gold bands. Working with my hands all day I wanted something that felt special but was easy to wear, that could take a beating and also had a low profile. Having met and talked with Adel at several craft shows I knew I wanted my ring made by him because he’s so kind and that translates into his sweet and feminine jewelry. This month I’ll be making the wedding bands for my fiance Dan and I! I decided I’m not going to plan them too much but just let the materials (def. some high karat yellow gold) and my heart figure this one out.

What made you want to become a jeweler?
I was studying to become an art teacher in college when I took my first jewelry making class. Honestly, before that I was never one to wear or purchase much jewelry. I fell in love with metalsmithing because it felt very natural to me and I found myself getting lost in it and all the awesome techniques and traditions that came along with it. I have always loved to make things and found that the small scale that jewelry requires is perfect for me! My fascination for tiny objects and minute details inspired the direction my jewelry took (also using a torch and fire it pretty cool too!). After college (I studied at UMass Dartmouth and Massachusetts College of Art) I worked as a bench jeweler at Ananda Khalsa Jewelry. I enjoyed making jewelry and selling it with Ananda so much that I decided to focus on my jewelry business and took Looka Jewelry full time in 2011!

Elizabeth Ryan’s winning design, the Lovebirds Engagement Ring

Why did you choose to enter our contest?
I discovered the Turtle Love Co. website and was drawn to the aesthetic of the jewelry you sell and saw the call to entry info. I chose to enter the engagement ring contest because a contest like this was something I have never done before. I thought it could be a fun experience and could also push me to work in a new direction. I liked the idea of creating a piece with a set list of requirements and adding my own touch to it sounded fun. It reminded me of projects we might have had in college!

What inspired your design?

My design was inspired by thinking about what I would look for in an engagement ring. As someone always working with my hands I liked the idea of creating a special ring that could be very wearable but also felt unique and handmade, perhaps something other artists might like to wear. Because I like nature and cute things (there, I said it!) I liked the idea of two love birds as a representation of love and partnership.

How do you feel about your design winning?
I am very excited about winning the design contest! I created the design as something I would enjoy wearing so it feels good to know others would enjoy wearing a ring like this too. I think it’s great that more and more people are looking for handmade and unique engagement rings and want something that speaks to them and their relationship. I think that’s super special!

On Monday we shared a photo from our vintage ring shoot at The Green Hand, a magnificent used book store in Portland, Maine. Michelle, the owner of The Green Hand, helped us choose a selection of beautiful antique hardcover books to photograph some of our vintage engagement rings on. Here is our Josephine Vintage Diamond Engagement Ring resting on the gorgeous green, blue, and gold cover of one of the books. Thanks again to Michelle for letting us explore her shop- it was the perfect backdrop for our antique engagement rings and we came away with some interesting books too!

Our most popular blog post this week is Alicia’s ode to The Big Lebowski entitled “How finding my inner Dude helped me love my wedding day: 5 easy steps.” In it, she offers tips for de-stressing by taking cues from the movie’s hero like, among other things, enjoying a game of bowling.

Our Currently Loving guest posts for the week came from Carly from Miss Teacups and Laura of Fore Front Fashion, who chose our Sterling Silver Wide Vine Ring and Vintage Art Deco Style Diamond Necklace as their respective favorites. Carly’s Country-chic themed post can be found here and Laura’s 1920s flapper inspired post is here.

Turtle Love Co announces the winners of its first annual jewelry design contest

Turtle Love Co. is pleased to announce the winners of its first annual engagement ring design contest. Elizabeth Ryan’s Lovebirds ring took first place, and Cathy Heinz’ Lady of the Lake ring was awarded second place in the juried portion of the contest. Heather Perry’s Livinia ring won the Popular Vote, with the most votes from online voters.

Each winning design will be featured in Turtle Love Co.‘s product line, including special packaging and promotion of the artist and the winning design. In addition, the first and second place juried winners receive $1,000 and $500 respectively for their designs; the winner of the popular vote receives $1,000.

Now, here is a bit more information about the winners!:

Elizabeth Ryan began designing jewelry under the name Looka Jewelry in 2006 after falling in love with metalsmithing in college. She finds that one of the joys of being a jeweler is “creating something that others hold on to and find sentimental value in.” Ms. Ryan’s design for the contest was inspired by what she herself would want in an engagement ring. “As someone always working with my hands I liked the idea of creating a special ring that could be very wearable but also felt unique and handmade, perhaps something other artists might like to wear,” she says. The winning ring design features two birds on either side of a 5mm white topaz stone, a design choice Ryan says was inspired by a love of cute things and nature: “I liked the idea of two love birds as a representation of love and partnership…[and] a lot of my work incorporates mixed metals so I knew this design needed that touch too.”

Cathy Heinz can’t remember a time when she wasn’t creating jewelry and has been selling her creations professionally for the past 11 years. She describes her style as refined, modern, simple, and feminine but not cutesy and says that her favorite part of being a jeweler is having the ability to create any design she can imagine and making pieces that strike an emotional chord with people because “being able to participate in [people’s] lives that way is something special.” The design Ms. Heinz submitted to the contest, featuring a stone rising out of a round lake of silver, was inspired both by the legend of the Lady of the Lake and by her customers. “I’ve done quite a few engagement ring makeovers,” she says, “I wanted to make something timeless that would look just as good on the 25th anniversary as it did at the wedding.”

Heather Perry moved to Maine from Baltimore, Maryland, where she had earned her BFA in sculpture. She came to Maine for a change of pace, and she can now be found tucked in a distant corner of Maine, where the Eastern seaboard of the United States bumps up against Canada. Heather shares her home in Robbinston, Maine with her husband and 12-year-old son. Robinston is near the woods and the rugged Maine coast that inspires her work, but pretty far from everything else. So Heather’s trips to the “big city” of Portland are punctuated by visits to music stores, Japanese restaurants, and other treats she and her son can’t get in their hometown. Heather approaches her truly awe-inspiring jewelry designs as sculpture, and hand sculpts each design in wax before it is cast in recycled precious metals.
