We like local businesses, and we like food. So Xander and I embarked on a short jaunt to Kathy & Dave’s Cafe to check out our neighbors.
It turns out that despite the rather boring exterior (I’ve lived nearby for five years and never been inside!), inside is a vibrant diner community. The parking lot is often packed, especially on weekend mornings.
The space is clean and pleasant and well-lit by a sunny greenhouse/atrium thingie that you can’t see from the street.
The food is classic diner food, and it’s good (for the psyche, at least).
I’d intended to get grilled cheese with tomato and onion, but Xander’s chicken parm sandwich sounded awful good (and like a better deal), so I ditched the grilled cheese and went for the chicken parm. It was awesome. The chicken with thin and crispy, with a good proportion of breading-to-chicken. Just the right amount of cheese and tomato sauce, and some tasty fries.
We’ll definitely be back, though this is one of those good things that must be taken in moderation!
Kathy & Dave’s Cafe is at 949 Forest Avenue, Portland, Maine.
